AN OVERVIEW OF WOMEN IN THE POLITICAL ARENA
Apurva Pitale
DOI : 10.5281/AMIERJ.7924307
Abstract
Certificate
This research paper focuses on women in the political arena particularly in India. For years women have been treated
as second class citizens across the globe. Besides fighting for their basic rights, women have also had to fight for their
political rights. Although, in India women have been politically active since the pre-independence period, their
participation in the political sphere has been disproportionate. Historically, the Indian political system has been male
dominated and women’s representation has been low. Women may have been given the “Right to Vote” since the
beginning but their electoral representation has been low for many years. Multiple factors including a patriarchal
mind-set, illiteracy, lack of access to resources etc. have been at play even after independence for their poor
representation. To bridge the gender gap and to overcome the hurdles of gender stereotyping and gender
discrimination, equal participation of women in electoral politics is a must.
This paper essentially aims at analysing the current scenario in Indian politics with respect women’s participation. It
will also analyse the impact of reservation of seats for women in the local-self-governments and how this could be
replicated in the State Assemblies as well as the Parliament.

IMPACT OF NON- TRADITIONAL CAREERS ON WOMEN AND THEIR LIVES – MOTIVATION & CHALLENGES
Ms. Deepika Kotian
DOI : 10.5281/AMIERJ.7924360
Abstract
Certificate
A woman is seen as an epitome of care. She is graceful, beautiful, sincere, delicate, innocent and naive. This
connotation about woman has been prevalent in the society from decades and not much has changed since then. Today,
women have broken the barriers of fragility and become fierce, have become the epitome of hard work which captures
the beauty and grandeur of the work they perform. Even though women have achieved far and above from the
expectations bestowed upon them, the uncertainty and lack of support from the society has only added to the many
challenges that they have faced and continue to face today.

Lakshmi Priya G. & Manisha Karne
DOI : 10.5281/AMIERJ.7924373
Abstract

According to the WHO definition, someone is considered healthy if they are both physically and psychologically well. Studies show that women are more likely than men to experience mental health issues (Piccinelli & Homen, 1997). Going to work can
add stress and tension to a woman's life because of the multiple roles she juggles as a mother, caretaker, and
homemaker. The Nielsen Company (2011) conducted a study which found Indian women to be the world's most stressed-out women. Indian women. It also examines the women's access to assistance, including any social or institutional support.

WOMEN WORKING IN THE GIG ECONOMY
Ms. Ambika Jain
DOI : 10.5281/AMIERJ.7924383
Abstract
Certificate
Ranging across the beauty industry, domestic work, food delivery, cab services and medical care, along with the
upcoming digital labour due to growth in remote working, the gig economy holds immense potential to fill the gaps
for employment generation in India, principally for women with the ability to balance work and family responsibility
and gain financial independence in due process. This paper examines the current trends in India’s gig economy
workspace for women. It also examines if its expansion in the future will significantly improve indicators like female
labour force participation rates. This will contribute to economic growth. The paper also aims to familiarise the reader
with the terminology used while referring to the gig economy. As the workspace horizon shifts from traditional whitecollar
jobs to more contract-based work, growth in such on-demand/platform jobs is rising, raising probing questions
like changes in policymaking and work benefits to accommodate this new rising workforce. Viewing it from a gendered
lens to include questions like fair treatment and equality coupled with pay parity will give further insight into the
conditions of women who are going to be a significant part of this rising workforce and thereby help in understanding
if being a part of the gig economy accrues any tremendous benefits to women whilst creating a gender-sensitive work
environment.

INFORMAL ECONOMY IN INDIA AND TRADE UNION ACTIVITY
Dr. Ceena Paul
DOI : 10.5281/AMIERJ.7924389
Abstract
Certificate
In 2016, the International Labour Organisation estimates that two billion people who are employed worldwide and
are 15 years of age or older work informally, accounting for 61.2% of all employment. 83% of the workforce in India
is employed by the unorganised sector, compared to 17% by the organised sector. Because the informal worker lacks
a variety of security measures, including employment security, job security, and work security, as well as because of
the rising informalization trend, which has moved jobs from categories where they could be collectively bargained to
ones where they cannot, the need for union protection in the informal workplace is crucial. However, one significant
disadvantage of informal employment is the lack of effective unionisation. Traditional trade unions around the world
have tried a number of strategies to organise these informal workers as part of the current structure. Traditional trade
unions struggle to organise informal workers due to a variety of problems and obstacles. Despite the difficulties
traditional trade unions have had organising the informal workforce, over the past few decades, these workers have
organised themselves in a variety of ways to strengthen their bargaining position, their economic standing, and their
standard of living. These consist of workers' associations such as trade unions, cooperatives, and others. The term
"Membership-Based Organisations" (MBOs) is used by members of the WIEGO network, allies, and partner
organisations to describe the variety of these organisations in the informal economy. In this paper, a few (MBOs) that
organise women who work in the informal sector in India are highlighted. The following sections make up the structure
of the paper: (1) An overview of the informal economy in India (2) Formal Trade Union and informal sector (3) The
difficulties unions face in organising workers in the informal sector (4) Organisational structures of membershipbased
organisations (5) MBOs operating in India (5) Conclusions.
