The word Personality, itself holds fascination for the general public. Most of the popular
meanings fall under one of two headings. The first use is related to social skill or adroitness. The
personality of an individual may be assessed by the effectiveness with which he or she is able to
elicit positive reactions from various persons under different conditions. Therefore when a
teacher refers to a student as presenting a personality problem is probably indicating the
inadequacy of his social skills to maintain satisfactory relations with his fellow students and the
teacher. The second use considers the personality of an individual to consist of the most
outstanding or salient impression that he or she creates in others. A person may therefore be said
to have a "submissive personality" or a "fearful personality". Allport (1937) in an exhaustive
survey of the literature extracted almost fifty different definitions. Allportdistinguishties between
biosocial and biophysical definitions. The biosocial definitions shows that it is the reaction of
other individuals to the subject that define the subject's personality. The biophysical definition
relates personality firmly in characteristics or qualities of the subject. Personality thus has an
organic as well as a perceived side and may be linked to specific qualities of the individual that
are susceptible to objective description and measurement.

People forms an important part in any organization as they are the service providers to the customers. Retailers rely on people to perform the basic retailing activities, such as buying and displaying merchandize and providing service to customers. Many big retailers require people not only for performing the core and facilitating customer services but also for enhancing supplementary services for its customers. Though having the right product at the right time and the right place is what retail calls for, still it is highly supported by the right people at various levels. Proper planning, organizing, strategizing along with excellent execution is the key to the success for any retailer. HR people are the backbone of any company, and the success of retail business depends a lot upon the kind of HR strategies it is following and how people are managed.
Balwantrai Mehta study team had observed that development process is futile without participation of people. The voluntary organizations world-over have served as catalyst who link the people in development process. They create development awareness, mobilisation and organised people in development process. This reality has been recognised by the Government of India by seeking partnership with the voluntary sector in the development process.
The term ‘Third Sector’ is one of the hotly debated as to what is within the preview of and what is not within the preview of the Third Sector. The researchers like Dr. Rajesh Tandan of PRIA would go to the extent of including active citizenship; which is not formally organized, whereas some others would include trade unions and cooperatives and most others would equate non-profit sector with the “Third Sector” and regard it as an entity distinct from the Public Sector (state and government) and the Private Sector (economy). However, there is a broad agreement among the researchers in the field of the ‘Third Sector’ research that their endeavour is to establish “civil society” a just and exploitation free society.
